Have you ever experienced that sinking feeling when you are half way through cooking dinner and you realize you are missing something? I always think my pantry is better stocked than it actually is and so I have a bad habit of not reading through an entire recipe and ingredient list before starting to cook. Thankfully there are common ingredient substitutions that we can use when in a bind.
The other day I was making a dish with a vermouth pan sauce and I don’t know about you, but vermouth is not something I would have on hand unless I bought it for a specific recipe. So when I got to that step I panicked, but with my trusty substitution guide realized it would be fine if I reached for my cooking sherry instead.
If I would have been better about meal planning that week, I would have made sure I had shopped for everything I needed before cooking. But when I let myself rush through meal planning and don’t rely on support to plan my meals and shop for groceries, it’s nice to at least have a guide for common ingredient substitutions on hand to keep me from running to the grocery store mid-stir.
